Archipelago Artists' Bios KEY: Suzanne Anker
(NY) Suzanne Anker (NY) is a visual artist and theoretician working with genetic imagery. Her work has been shown both nationally and internationally including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC; the Philips Collection, P.S. 1 Museum, New York, NY; the Statkunst, Koln, Germany; the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan; the Denver Art Museum; and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA. Her most recent exhibition, The Butterfly in the Brain was in May 2002 at Universal Concepts Unlimited in New York City. Ms. Anker is currently Chair of the Art History Department at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Her forthcoming book "The Molecular Gaze: Art in the Genetic Age" (co-authored with Dorothy Nelkin) will be published by Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory Press in 2003. Lillian Ball (NY) has a multidisciplinary background in anthropology, ethnographic film, and design. Her work has been on display at the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, Austria; Museum of Contemporary Art in Geneva, Belgium; Cologne Kunstverein, Germany; Hudson River Museum, Westchester; Queens Museum of Art, Bulova and the New Museum, New York, NY. Ball is the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts Individual Sculpture Grant. John Bowman (NY) works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, and digital media. Known primarily for his painting and drawing, Bowman is represented by the Winston Wachter Mayer Gallery, New York, NY and Seattle, WA.Ê His solo exhibitions include the Queens Museum, Holly Solomon Gallery, Lang O'Hara Gallery, and Tibor de Nagy Gallery, all in New York, and the Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. Maureen Connor
Since the mid 70s Maureen Connor has been committed to the exploration of gender and its modes of representation. Although the forms as well as the media Maureen has used has changed quite a bit over the years, she has continued to concentrate on a number of related and often overlapping concerns. Included among these are the investigation of how sexuality develops, especially for women, an interest in the symbolic power of the mundane, various analyses of the body and its relation to culture, a desire to engage the audience in an active, physical manner and an emphasis on humor and sensual pleasure. Kim Dickey (CO) is a ceramics and installation artist. She has exhibited in numerous museums, such as Mass MOCA, the Everson Museum, the American Craft Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver. She has also been included in many group shows in Germany, Japan, Korea, United Kingdom and United States. Dickey is the recipient of the Artist Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the New York State Artists Grant from the Empire State Crafts Alliance. Rebecca DiDomenico (CO)
is a sculptor and installation artist who has exhibited extensively throughout the United States including the San Francisco Crafts and Folk Art Museum, CA; Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, CO; Schoharie County Arts Council, New York, NY; and the Lubbock Fine Art Center, TX.Ê DiDomenico co-curated and curated several shows including, Still From Life and Out of This World And (Into The Next) at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Anatomy of A Table at the Boulder Artist Gallery, CO. Jim Dingilian (NY) is a sculptor who has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad since 1996 including Grahm Modern Gallery and Cheryl Pelavin Fine Art, New York, NY; Marcel Sitcoske Gallery, San Francisco, CA, and at EV+A in Limerick, Ireland.Ê He is represented by the McKenzie Gallery in New York City. Drew Dominick (CA) is a sculptor who has exhibited in numerous galleries around the country including Team Gallery, Jose Friere Fine Arts, New York, NY; Pagent, Los Angeles, CA.Ê After graduating with a Masters in Sculpture in 1992 he moved to New York City, where he lived for ten years.Ê Presently, he lives in Los Angeles where he teaches sculpture at UCLA.Ê Dominick has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York and abroad including a 1994 exhibition at the Vienna Secession. Ellen Driscoll (NY,MA) is a sculptor whose work includes installations such as The Loophole of Retreat, Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris and Passionate Attitudes, Threadwaxing Space both in New York, NY; public art projects such as As Above, So Below for the new Grand Central Terminal North, New York, NY; and Mum's the Word (a public banner project in collaboration with the Aphasia Support Group at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, MASS). Driscoll has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, Anonymous Was a Woman, Harvard University's Bunting Institute.Ê Her work is included in major private and public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of Art, NY. She is a Professor of Sculpture at Rhode Island School of Design. Mary Ehrin (CO) is a multimedia artist who has exhibited throughout the region including Grand Junction Art Center, Sink Gallery, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, and Rule Gallery. She recently received the Getzelman Scholarship Award in Studio Art from the University of Colorado and is in the permanent contemporary collection of the Denver Art Museum. Madeleine Hatz (Sweden,NY) was born and educated in Sweden and currently lives and works in New York. Based on painting, her work also includes sculpture, performance, installation, photography and video. It has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries in the United States and Europe. She has also held guest lectures at a number of universities, as well as published texts on her work and ideas. Linda Herritt (CO) is an installation artist who has exhibited extensively around the U.S, Mexico and Europe. Exhibitions include ACE Gallery, Pierogi 2000, The Drawing Center, and Florence Lynch Gallery, New York, NY; The San Francisco Art Institute, CA; The Santa Monica Museum, CA; Art & Idea, and Galer!a OMR, Mexico City, Mexico. Herritt is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award, a Rockefeller U.S./Mexico Fund for Culture Grant, and a NEA Sculpture Fellowship. Herritt is a Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Elana Herzog (NY) is a sculptor and an installation artist. She has had solo exhibitions at P.P.O.W. Gallery, Black and Herron Space, Florence Lynch Gallery, New York, NY; Momenta Art, Brooklyn, NY; Zilkha Gallery, Wesleyan University, CT, and Nelson Gallery, University of California at Davis. She received the Colorado Council on the Arts Project Grant in 2000 and the Boulder Arts Commission Grant award in 1993. Howard McCalebb (NY) is a sculptor who recently had a solo show at Momenta Art, Brooklyn, NY. He has taught at Parsons School of Design, New York, NY; Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; and California State University, San Jose, CA. McCalebb also has extensive experience in lecturing around the United States and other countries around the world. In 2001, he lectured at the China National Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou, People's Republic of China. Burt Payne 3 (CO) is a sculptor and installation artist. Payne 3 is the recipient of Villa St. Clair, Sete, France Fellowship, where he organized a solo site-specific installation. He has also displayed his work at Track 16 Gallery, Santa Monica; Mint Gallery, Valencia, CA; and Shepards Bush Gallery, London, United Kingdom. He received his BFA with a minor in Women's Studies at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, NY and attended California Institute of the Arts for his MFA degree. She has exhibited internationally at the Zolla Lieberman Gallery, Chicago, IL; Kerlin Gallery, Dublin; Michael Gold Gallery, NY; Edith Cowen University, Perth, Australia and has collaborated in PLOT with Katie Holten since 1999. Elizabeth Olbert (ME) is a painter represented by Caren Golden Gallery, New York, NY. Romeo (CO) is a sculptor whose work is in many private collections including the Denver Art Museum, Kaiser Permanente, and the W. W.Ê Reynolds Companies.Ê In 1996, she installed a large-scale public sculpture for Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, through the Colorado Council on the Arts' Public Art Program. She has also completed grant projects through the Colorado Council on the Arts and the New Forms, Regional Initiative programs.Ê In 1996 she and her husband, Reed Weimer were the recipients of the Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts and the Denver Art Museum Alliance for Contemporary Art's AFKEY award. Shostrom also curates Trunk Show, an international traveling art exhibition whose next stop is at Sirius Center, Cohb, Ireland in November 2004. Shostrom participated in Mir2, which won the Dance Theater Workshop's 2002 Bessie award for Performance, Installation and New Media.
